Working Bee Wrap-Up – Bluebird Conditions & Brilliant Effort
What a day on the mountain!
We were treated to classic Ruapehu bluebird conditions in March: clear skies, warm sunshine and breathtaking views stretching across the plateau. It was the perfect backdrop for a hugely successful Working Bee at the lodge. The turnout was outstanding, with members travelling up the mountain ready to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in.
Those in attendance were; Bill Nichol, Dave Taylor, Dave Dwyer, Glenys Gilberd, Dave Gilbert, Olivia Gilberd, Gordon Horsley, Todd Winlove, Toby Winlove, Yuri Hosokawa, Craig Percy and Gus McIntosh.
With strong numbers and great teamwork, we achieved an enormous amount:
✅ Doors reset and aligned – smooth and ready for winter foot traffic 🎨 Club sign freshly painted – standing proud against the mountain backdrop 🧽 Full lodge clean inside and out – absolutely spick and span 🏔️ External lodge clean completed – weathered surfaces refreshed 🔥 Chimney repaired and thoroughly cleaned – safe and ready to keep us warm 🛠️ Roof leaks repaired – sealed up tight for the season ahead 🥫 Stores replenished and pantry organised and cleaned – prepared for busy weekends ☀️ Mattresses and bedding aired in the sunshine – fresh mountain air does wonders!
Seeing mattresses and bedding lined up in the sun across the rocky terrain was a classic Working Bee sight — hard work mixed with plenty of laughs.
To Phil and Tracy Brown who went up to the hut a couple of weeks after the working bee, and with just the two of them painted the roof - a huge job and the hut now looks absolutely brilliant. Thank-you Phil and Tracy!
Working bees are about more than maintenance, they’re about community. From sanding and staining outdoor tables to hauling gear across volcanic rock, everyone pitching in with energy and good humour. It was fantastic to see families involved, friendships strengthened, and the next generation enjoying time at the club. The lodge is now looking the best it has in years; clean, tidy, weather-tight and fully prepared to welcome members and guests for another brilliant ski season.
With the hard work done and the lodge shining under that big Ruapehu sky, now its just a case of…bring on the snow!
